After a brief 1.5 years in medical school (studying with the intention of becoming a Pediatrician), I realized that I no longer could see myself finding happiness and fulfillment within that profession...
Faced with the monumental fork in the road, I did some soul searching and took the path less chosen, following my heart and my budding passion in real estate, construction, design, rehabbing old homes, and investing. (Truth be told, watching HGTV late at night after finishing my studying in med school helped me de-stress and unwind, so i thought, "Why not? What's the worst that could happen?")
I cracked open my laptop, searched for real estate jobs on craigslist, and landed an assistant's job at my first interview. That was the easy part! I worked with a developer's agent in the West Loop, Bucktown, and Lincoln Park, and definitely got a crash course in new construction, city neighborhoods (and city agents!), and the fast paced nature of the business.
I was hooked, but not loving being on-call for this other agent, handling issues that were frankly WELL above my pay grade, and in the meanwhile, not learning how to grow my own business or connect with new clients.
Within 6 months, I was licensed and ready to move on, so I jumped ship and landed at my forever brokerage, RE/MAX In The Village. They welcomed me like family, and it's great to be surrounded and supported by some of the brightest and most successful agents in our local market. I truly learned from the best.
It was terrible timing and quite naive to start my (self-supported, self-earned) real estate career at 25, just out of school, on my own with no savings -- and then the market came to a grinding halt as we headed into the 2008 crash.
Things looked bleak for a little while there, but sheer willpower and determination to succeed made me dig in my heels and take as many trainings as I could so that I would be better equipped to help any clients that came my way.
As my business has grown, many of my first clients are now coming back to me as their needs are changing or as their families are starting to outgrow their homes.
Accomplishing the sell-then-buy, or buy-then-sell as it may be, is part art and part science, especially in this whacky lopsided sellers' market with -- not even exaggerating in many cases these days -- 100+ buyers lining up for each new home that comes on the market.
Having a Realtor who understands the proper order and timing for your specific needs and situation, and who "plays well in the sandbox" with other agents, will benefit you BIG TIME when it comes down to getting your offer accepted in a bidding war -- that's what I'm here for!
