Ukrainian Village is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Chicago, and it has some of the city's best restaurants and bars. The neighborhood is a mix of historic Chicago bungalows, newer apartments and condos, and industrial businesses along the river. Ukrainian Village is an eclectic, bustling neighborhood on the near northwest side of Chicago. It’s one of the best places to live in Chicago if you want to feel like a true local.
Like many of Chicago’s neighborhoods, Ukrainian Village has its roots in immigration. The first wave of Ukrainian immigrants arrived in the late 19th century and settled into two distinct areas: North Lawndale and West Town. The name “Ukrainian Village” was originally used by the Chicago Tribune for its coverage of both neighborhoods, but it soon became synonymous with West Town. The name stuck even though it no longer had any ties to North Lawndale. Most people associate Ukrainian Village with Ukrainian culture but there are also many other cultures represented here including Polish, German and Mexican-American as well as a large LGBT community. This makes Ukrainian Village one of the most diverse neighborhoods in all of Chicago!
The neighborhood is bounded by Division Street to the north, Damen Avenue on the east, Grand Avenue on the south and Western Avenue on the west. Ukrainian Village is known for its diversity, with residents from all over the world calling it home.
There are many beautiful streetscapes in Ukrainian Village that feature historic homes that date back to when this area was first settled. This area also has some great shopping areas like Division Street and Kedzie Avenue that offer everything from vintage clothing stores to art galleries.
Regarding Ukrainian Village real estate -- The neighborhood has experienced significant gentrification since 2000 with rising property values and increasing rents. Much of this can be attributed to its proximity to downtown and Wicker Park—the neighborhood is about 1½ miles away from both neighborhoods—as well as its access to mass transit options such as CTA buses and trains.
