The area was largely undeveloped until after World War II when housing began being built along Milwaukee Avenue. Today, Jefferson Park has a diverse population including Latinos, African-Americans and immigrants from Bosnia & Herzegovina and Poland.

Jefferson Park has excellent public transportation with Milwaukee Avenue being served by both the Blue Line El train at Jefferson Park station as well as six CTA bus routes (Jefferson Park/Montrose) serving Milwaukee Avenue: 8 Halsted; 9 Ashland.
